Expo 2030 Riyadh — Complete Guide | Dates, Theme & Scale

Riyadh EXPO 2030

The 2025 Osaka/Kansai World Expo closed in October 2025. Many expo fans have already set their sights on what comes next. After the Yokohama Flower Expo and Belgrade Specialised Expo in 2027, the next major milestone is Expo 2030 Riyadh — the largest registered world expo in history. Here’s everything confirmed so far.

What Is Expo 2030 Riyadh?

The official name is the 2030 Riyadh World Exposition (Expo 2030 Riyadh). It will be held in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, for six months starting in autumn 2030. It is a Registered Exposition, officially sanctioned by the BIE (Bureau International des Expositions).

Registered Expos are the main category of world expo, held roughly every five years. The 2025 Osaka/Kansai Expo was a Registered Exposition, and Riyadh will be the next one in line.

Basic Information

Official Name2030 Riyadh World Exposition / Expo 2030 Riyadh
LocationRiyadh, Saudi Arabia
DatesOctober 1, 2030 (Wednesday) – March 31, 2031 (Monday)
DurationApproximately 6 months
ThemeThe Era of Change: Together for a Foresighted Tomorrow
OrganizerGovernment of Saudi Arabia

Theme and Three Sub-Themes

The official theme is “The Era of Change: Together for a Foresighted Tomorrow.”

Three sub-themes sit under this umbrella:

  • Transformational Technology
  • Sustainable Solutions
  • Prosperous People

Exhibitions are expected to focus on areas like AI, renewable energy, and smart cities. The expo also carries deep national significance for Saudi Arabia — it serves as a showcase for the country’s modernization efforts under Vision 2030, the government’s long-term plan to reduce the country’s dependence on oil and build a more diverse, technology-driven economy.

Scale: About Four Times the Size of the Osaka Expo

The numbers are staggering. Here’s how Expo 2030 Riyadh compares to the 2025 Osaka/Kansai Expo:

Expo 2030 RiyadhExpo 2025 Osaka/Kansai
Site Areaapprox. 6,000,000 m²approx. 1,550,000 m²
Participating Countries & Organizations197 countries + 29 international organizations161 countries + 8 international organizations
Expected Visitors42 million+approx. 28.2 million

The venue will be divided into five themed zones. Details will be announced in stages.

If the Osaka Expo felt like the whole world packed onto one island, Riyadh will be four times that size. Just walking around the site sounds like a workout.

…Though honestly, I walked around Osaka plenty of times and it felt massive enough. Four times that? I’m already a little terrified. 😂

Construction Update (as of April 2026)

Infrastructure work kicked into high gear in April 2026.

Riyadh-based construction firm Al Yamama has been awarded a contract covering roads, water, sewage, electricity, communications, and EV charging infrastructure across the site. The first infrastructure contract was signed in December 2025, and this second contract marks a significant acceleration.

Starting major construction more than four years before opening day reflects lessons learned from past expos — including Osaka — where construction delays caused real problems. As an expo fan, seeing things move this early is reassuring.

Japan’s Participation

On December 16, 2025, the Japanese government officially decided to participate in Expo 2030 Riyadh at a Cabinet meeting.

Details about the Japan Pavilion — its theme, design, and exhibitions — have not yet been announced. More to come as information is released.

Three Things I’m Most Excited About

I’m Aika — I visited the Osaka/Kansai Expo 29 times, and I’m already planning a trip to the 2027 Yokohama Flower Expo. Expo 2030 Riyadh is my ultimate goal, and I’ve been following the news closely ever since.

Here are the three things I’m most looking forward to.

① What Will the Saudi Arabia Pavilion Look Like?

At the Osaka Expo, the Saudi Arabia Pavilion already felt seriously impressive — and that was when Saudi Arabia was just a participating country. Now that they’re the host nation, I can only imagine how far they’ll go. I genuinely cannot wait.

② The Mascot Design

The official mascot is expected to be revealed sometime in 2026. The concept is described as a spirit that controls light and wind, and the design team reportedly includes creatives with backgrounds at Disney and Pixar. Expectations are high. I’ll share the news here as soon as it drops.

③ A First-Timer’s Guide to the Middle East

This will be the first Registered Exposition ever held in the Middle East. That means everything — climate, food culture, transportation, visa requirements — will be different from any expo trip I’ve taken before. I’m already starting to gather information bit by bit, and I’d recommend doing the same if you’re thinking about going.
